Simple, declarative sentences are formed with the slots used as follows:

  1. The subject

  2. The finite, or conjugated, verb

  3. The object(s) of the verb phrase

  4. Any adverbial modifiers, such as descriptions of manner, place, and order of time

  5. Any verb complements, such as when writing a sentence in the past perfect, present perfect, or future tenses

Subject-Verb-Object Order

Example: Ich gehe morgen gerne zur Arbeit
Ich - the subject
gehe - the conjugated verb

German phrase structures

These are the FOUR German sentences patterns:

  1. standard - Subject - Verb - Everything else/Subject - Verb - More Nouns - More Verbs (infinitives, past participles, or separable prefixes)

  2. inverted sentence structure - swap around the SUBJECT and VERB, primarily when asking a YES / NO question:

Verb - Subject - More Nouns - More Verbs.

  3. Transposed German sentence structure: More Nouns - Verb - subject - More Verbs

  4. subordinated german sentence structure - is used in a dependent, a.k.a. subordinating clause.
